Karen Witte (Hughes) - Class Of 1965

Mrs. Karen Juanita Hughes, 62, of Lebanon, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis.

Mrs. Hughes was born March 31, 1947, in Indianapolis. She was the daughter of the late Byron Herbert and Juanita Arlene (Thomas) Witte.

When she was seven years old, she and her family moved to Boone County and resided in the Rosston and Waugh community. She then moved to Thorntown where she resided with a grandmother, Alice Thomas, and attended Thorntown High School.

She married Kenneth Ray Hughes on Sept., 14, 1963, in Boone County. Mr. Hughes survives.

Mrs. Hughes worked as a retail clerk in Lebanon at the 3-D Store and the J. C. Penney Department Store. She worked for seven years in her last position as manager of Secure Storage, operated by Ed Cooney in Lebanon. She retired in 2007 due to her health.

She was a devoted wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed doing things to help others and appreciated her friends. Traveling and flower gardening were frequent activities.

Mrs. Hughes was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lebanon.

Survivors include her husband, who resides in Lebanon; stepmother, Marilyn Witte of Indianapolis; three children, Regina J. Garner and husband Eric of Lebanon, Kenneth R. “Randy” Hughes of Brownsburg and Daisy L. Thomas and husband Timothy of Crawfordsville; sisters, Sandra Taylor and husband Max of Gaffney, S.C., Andrea Sayles of Lebanon, Nancy Morris of Noblesville, Sharon Maple and husband Steve of Indianapolis, and Cheryl McGinley and husband Marty, Carla Bowman and husband Russell and Betty Varvel, all of Lebanon; one brother, Dana Witte and wife Ellen of Thorntown; eight grandchildren, Sunshine Stillwell and husband Steve of Brownsburg, Rebecca Hughes and Cole Garner, both of Lebanon, Tabatha Thomas, Kristie Thomas and Allison Thomas, all of Crawfordsville, and Bryce Hughes and Hannah Hughes, both of Brownsburg; four great-grandchildren, Isabelle Stillwell, Isaac Stillwell, Kyle Stillwell and Madison Stillwell, all of Brownsburg.

She was preceded in death by her father, Byron H. Witte; her mother, Juanita Varvel; stepfather, Calvin Varvel; and a grandmother, Alice Thomas.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services are 7 p.m. Monday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Merv McNair officiating. Interment at Sugar Plain Cemetery near Thorntown will follow cremation.
