John Gillan

July 16, 1944 - March 10, 2021

Mr. John Gillan, 76, of Thorntown, passed away unexpectedly on March 10, 2021.

John was born July 16, 1944 in Lebanon to the late Bill and Julia Ellen (Spencer) Gillan. He was married to Sharon (Bowen) Gillan, she died on March 10, 2021.

John was a graduate of Thorntown High School Class of 1962 and Purdue University.  He was a contractor and farmed. After retiring, John loved his new part-time job at Country Gardens with best friends Gene & Peggy Poe.

John absolutely loved his family, friends, church and community. John was an active member of Thorntown Christian Church, Thorntown American Legion and Thorntown Kiwanis.  He also volunteered his time at Thorntown Heritage Museum, Thorntown Public Library and Sugar Creek Art Center by serving on the board of directors. He also enjoyed all things Purdue and supporting Western Boone schools and sports teams, doing various woodworking projects and collecting stamps.

Survivors include his children, Kristin (Don) Barnes of Thorntown, Patrick Gillan of Crawfordsville, Matthew Gillan of Crawfordsville, Doug Merrill of Thorntown and Jodie Merrill (Mary Helen Atkins) of Denton, NC; grandchildren, J.R. (Lyndsay) Merrill, Miriah Merrill, Houston (Emily) Phillips, Hannah Phillips, Hunter Phillips, Jake Barnes, Emily (Josh) Hollums and Courtney Barnes; great-grandchildren, Gryson Louks, Addalynn Loucks, Ryker Louks and Brooks Hollum.

Family and friend will gather Wednesday, March 17 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Jewell officiating in the Thorntown Christian Church, 125 W. Main Street, Thorntown, Indiana 46071.  John will be laid to rest in the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown following Military Rites.  You are invited to visit the website www.strawmyerdrury.com where you may sign his online register and leave a personal message.
