Byron Craven - Class Of 1959

Mr. Alton “Barney” Cravens, 67, of Lebanon, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at Parkwood Health Care Center in Lebanon.

Mr. Cravens was born June 24, 1941, in Colfax. He was a son of the late Alton Kaiser and Mildred (Shumate) Cravens. He graduated from Thorntown High School in 1959. He married Linda Smith Smart on Jan. 8, 1996, in Lebanon. She survives. Mr. Cravens owned L.P. Gas of Colfax from 1969 to 1997, when he retired. He was past president and a life member of the Tippecanoe Shrine Club. He also held memberships in the Colfax Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, Colfax American Legion, and was formerly a member of the Lebanon Elks and Eagles. Mr. Cravens enjoyed flowers, gardening and taking care of lawns. He had many friends and loved to collect antiques.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Kim Lenehan of North Judson, Jeff Cravens of Florida, Brad Cravens of Tennessee and Byron Cravens Jr. of Florida; three stepchildren, Kelly Black of Connecticut, Don Smith Jr. of Lafayette and Stephanie Smith of Monticello; one sister, Kay Harrison of Yorktown; and one brother, Tom Cravens of Illinois. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Russell & Hitch Funeral Home, 223 N. Meridian St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dean DeVries officiating. Cremation will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
