Carl (Horlacher) - Class Of 1940

Carl Samuel Horlacher, 93, went to be with his Lord on Apr. 17, 2016. He was born on Jan. 28, 1923, the son of the now late Claude and Lelah (Strange) Horlacher. Carl married Lois Ruth Acton on January 18, 1952.

Carl was a 1940 graduate of Dover High School. He was a WWII veteran, being in the first group of 18-year-olds drafted from Boone County. He served in the 250th Coast Artillery on Amchitka Island in the Aleutian Chain. Upon his return to Indiana, he farmed in Boone County.

Carl was a member of the 1952 Lebanon VFW basketball team that went to the national tournament in Bozeman, Montana. He participated in Rural Youth, enjoying square dancing and was a caller for dances across the state.

Carl was a Boone County REMC Minuteman. He received the Breeders and Feeders Distinguished Farmer of the Year award in 1996. He was also a member of the Thorntown American Legion Post 218 and was a dedicated Christian and member of Shannondale Presbyterian Church where he served as elder, clerk of the session, trustee and Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lois, daughter Sheila (Steve) Sims of Carmel, son Kent (Lisa) Horlacher of Thorntown, grandchildren Chris (Jody) Sims, Jeremy (Katie) Sims, Kelsey Horlacher and Sara Horlacher, great grandchildren Caleb, Cody and Cooper Sims. He is also survived by his sister Doris Sherrill, brothers Lloyd (Emmajean) Horlacher and Glen (Betty) Horlacher and sister-in-law Sandra Horlacher, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Phebe Smith and brother Clem Horlacher. Words cannot express how much he will be missed.

Family and friends will gather Wednesday, Apr. 20, 2016 for visitation from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and services will be held on Thursday, Apr. 21 at 10:30 a.m. with Jody Burks officiating in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Carl will be laid to rest at Shannondale Cemetery in Shannondale.
