Asher Cones, Thorntown, died on Christmas Eve 2014. Mr. Cones was born April 1, 1913 to Charles and Edna (Price) Cones. Maybe because of his April Fool’s Day birthday he always loved a good joke. He was the last surviving prankster of the Thorntown Gorilla. He was 101 years old.

A graduate of Thorntown High School Class of 1931, he lettered in both basketball and football. He married Wilma Castile on September 15, 1936. They had been married 68 years when Wilma died in 2004.

Mr. Cones worked at Allison’s during WW II. Later he was partners with his brother, Dick, in the Pure Oil Gas Station in Thorntown. Together they started and operated Cones Brothers Excavating until their retirement.

He was a member of the Thorntown United Methodist Church, Thorntown Masonic Lodge, charter member of the Thorntown Kiwanis Club and for many years he was volunteer fireman and Republican precinct committeeman.

Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers Glen, Dick, Donald and sisters Alta Estell, Mary Wilson and Janette Parker. Survivors are his daughter, Joyce Cones Rogers, Carmel and son Marvin (Peggy) Knoxville, TN., grandchildren: Gayle Cress, Mark Rogers; Bryan, Brad, Greg and Joseph Cones; nine great-grandchildren and his sister Phyllis Cones Jett Varney, Huntsville, AL.

Family and friends will gather at the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown on Monday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. for a graveside service.
