Tom Maiden - Class Of 1958 VIEW PROFILE

Thomas "Tom" Maiden, 82 of Monticello, Indiana, died at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, a giant heart stopped beating and he took his last breath at his residence with his family by his side. Tom was born on Monday, July 15, 1940, in Lebanon, Indiana, to John W. and Mary Jane (Crouch) Maiden. They preceded him in death. On June 3, 1960, in Frankfort, Indiana, he married Judith K. "Judy" Perkins. She survives. Tom was the oldest of four children. Thomas was a 1958 Graduate of Thorntown High School. He enjoyed and excelled in sports. Tom had lived in Lafayette, Indiana before moving to Monticello, Indiana in 1970. He retired from Eli Lilly in December of 1993 after 30 years of service. He then mowed for Norway Gardens and for Dick Hubbard. Tom spent some time working on the lake for Jordan Enterprises, then began driving a school bus for Twin Lakes School Corporation. He loved his students and had to give it up when he started having heart issues. He was a force to be reckoned with when playing pinochle, usually winning the game 64 with his family except when his grandson Cale beat him soundly and neither one of them forgot it. He loved playing Domino Train with his granddaughters (one of whom he said cheated) and seldom turned down a game of euchre. Tom loved watching, coaching all kinds of sports, and was a great believer in playing time for all team members, an attribute which made him one of the great founders and later coach for the Monticello Youth Football program for the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, teaching about trust, teamwork, and having fun playing football. Tom enjoyed working alongside some great individuals and many became life-long friends. Tom loved watching and cheering for his grandchildren in all their sports, musicals, theatrical productions, band performances, and bragged on them long and loud. He was the cheering section for his great niece, and earlier for Dennis's sister and was a voice for beginning soccer at Twin Lakes High School even though he had to learn all the rules and regulations, having never watched or played. Tom was a race fan spending many Mays at the Indy 500 and later championing the Brickyard 400 and all things NASCAR. He loved introducing the sport to younger family members. He was a fan from the beginning of the Indianapolis Colts. Tom and Judy were introduced to square dancing by friends, the Tolley's, in the 1980's and enjoyed the people, the traveling, and the business of it as well as Judy enjoying the pretty clothes. They met many wonderful people and danced in several cities and states, until family took priority, belonging to the 4-Seasons Dance Club in Monticello and others. Tom enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and slow pitch softball, as he said, "long past his prime". Tom loved and enjoyed living on Lake Freeman and delighted in teaching people to water ski. He enjoyed the First Baptist Church and the people there. Tom and Judy Maiden are the parents of Todd Maiden (Kathy Douglass) of West Lafayette, Indiana, Andy Maiden of Monticello, Indiana, and Dennis Chambers (Tracy) of Springport, Indiana, grandchildren that they raised Karisa Maiden (Kyle Frakes) of Winamac, Indiana, Eric Maiden (Lisa) of Grandview, Indiana, and Rebekah Maiden of Monticello, Indiana.
